Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Kim M — 15 May 2010
I'm looking forward now to reading the book after watching this movie. It's based on the true story of ballet dancer, Li Cunxin's demanding childhood and teen years in Mao's China and his decision to defect to the West while on a visit to the USA.
Bruce Beresford directed the movie and I was pleased to see that the story wasn't sensationalised in it's adaptation to film but that's not to say there aren't scenes which appeal to the emotions and the ballet is a joy in itself.
