Review of Manufactured Landscapes (2006) by Andrew T — 31 Dec 2008
When you stop and take a look around you, the chances are that the natural landscape has been tainted by the hands of man. Manâ??s footprint is clearly plastered all over this planet, a revelation that Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky cam to.
Jennifer Baichwalâ??s documentary follows Burtynsky shooting manâ??s impact on the natural landscape through modernism, focusing largely on that hub of mass industrialisation: China. Incorporating both Burtynskyâ??s still and his explanatory lectures, there is a slight air of pretension and self-glorification within this piece, though Burtynsy does make a relevant point.
What appears to be heaps and mounds of disused industrial waste and scraps of worthless materials are now important parts of peopleâ??s everyday lives, and are now living, breathing landscapes of the Earth.
We are now born into a world where manâ??s influence on the planet is all around us, and will be for years to come.
