Review of Manufactured Landscapes (2006) by Alex H — 19 May 2009
Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with Jennifer Baichwal or with Edward Burtnynsky. What I can tell you is that what you see seems to be a documentary that somehow transforms into a drama. The drama is not so much do we the audience 'get it', but rather does the director believe we 'got it' or not.
Like the groundhog, if we think the director thinks we 'got it' then we can rest easy, and have a happy ending. If not...and that is where the film leaves us. I liked the idea of a documentary that also had dramatic subtext.
The photography is, obviously, outstanding.
