Review of Mannequin (1987) by Todd P — 21 May 2009
80s cheese that is silly even by that decade's standards, but has somehow managed to get a cult following (even being mentioned in Ween's "Freedom of '76"). Notable for featuring Andrew McCarthy (a poor man's John Cusack), a young (and really nerdy-looking) James Spader, a pre-"Sex and the City" Kim Cattrall, Meshach Taylor as one of the swishiest gay characters this side of "Pickle Surprise," and the late (and very tiny) Estelle Getty.
Also notable for its shots of Philadelphia during the 1980s -- the pre-One Liberty Place skyline (before Billy Penn cursed the city's sports teams), the old Wanamaker's department store (including a scene involving its famous organ), and Rittenhouse Square (how the hell did McCarthy's character manage to be able to afford a loft apartment in that neighborhood, since he portrayed a loser who couldn't hold down any job before he got his mannequin gig?).
