Review of Mank (2020) by Locnes90 — 06 Dec 2020
David Fincher tends to direct movies that appeal to mass audiences, despite their dark content. This movie will not appeal to many casual viewers. It is steeped in old Hollywood references and requires an extreme film nerd's mind to get the most out of it.
From the history to the sound design to the cinematography (full of references to 'Citizen Kane'), you will feel the effort that went into this more if you went to film school. I hope that does not come across as snobbish.
That said, I wept at the ending because I appreciated the movie's message about how many of us don't get the credit we deserve for our contributions to the world (because so much of the credit we deserve gets sucked up by the wealthy and powerful).
This is a love letter from Fincher to his father and a love letter to cinema in general. It is one of the most visually stunning films I have ever seen, and it is epic in both its themes and scope. If you are willing to experience it on its terms, you may enjoy one of the best films ever made about the process of creating art and the toll it takes on the artist.
Absolutely magnificent.
