Review of Manic (2001) by David H — 04 Jul 2005
Don Cheadle stars as a counselor in a hospital for troubled teens. The supporting cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Bacall, and Zooey Deschanel. The story focuses on Lyle (Gordon-Levitt) who is admitted to the hospital after almost beating a kid to death with a baseball bat.
Like most of the others, Lyle can't accept that he has a problem. Lots of group counseling scenes, a corny basketball game, and general anarchy follows. Cheadle didn't have much to work with here, and with the possible exception of Chad (Bacall) I didn't find many of these kids interesting.
A nice try I guess, but it didn't work for me.
