Review of Maniac (2012) by Syed R — 28 Apr 2013
I was extremely excited about this movie, because not only did it look very creepy, gory and scary. But also because one of the best horror directors, Alexandre Aja was writing it and producing it. And thankfully, it was all of the above.
Still, it kind of let me down that there wasn't too many deaths in the movie, but I think I was ok because it didn't made the killer like a Michael Meyers type that kills everything that goes across his way.
Which made him a more like a real killer. Also, the way it was directed as in the point of the of the killer worked very well for, and more in the final scenes which looked great. It was a very interesting horror film and original in my opinion.
Even though I know its a remake, I haven't seen the original so I didn't have any expectations to overcome it. The acting was very good as well, from both Elijah Wood and French newcomer Nora Arnezeder.
With Elijah being extremely creepy and very believable. And Nora being very charming and charismatic, that makes you root for her till the end. I also felt some kind of pity for the killer because of how good they show his backstory and intentions that somehow makes you feel like he is a victim too, but not in the same way as his victims.
The ending was very unexpected and somehow made it a lot more better, by just going completely opposite to what would happen in any other horror movie, by focusing all the time on the killer eventhough he is not onscreen most of the movie.
Overall very good horror movie, and is probably one of the best ones I have seen so far this year 2013.
