Review of Maniac (2012) by Richard O — 27 Apr 2013
If you know the original cult classic MANIAC from 1980, with horror make-up legend Tom Savini (who also had a cameo in the original), you'll have an idea what to expect for this reboot. The original was disturbing the remake is on a whole new level due to the fact that the movie is mostly shot in first person view (Similar to Resident Evil video games) so you see everything through Frank's eyes (Elijah Wood), who I have a whole new respect for on an acting level, is totally absorbed in this character, it's kinda scary.
The movie makes you feel like your the one doing his terrible crimes and your suffering from schizophrenia. The plot is simple: A psychotic man, troubled by his childhood abuse, loose in NYC, kills young women and takes their scalps as trophies.
He finds the perfect woman in a photographer named Anna. The score doesn't help matters either, it is downright chilling...You can hear right away from the opening score that it is a homage to the 80s with some cool synth sounds and throbbing baseline.
This score is mostly electronic with some piano. It really fits when you think about the 80s film and score. This movie definitely stands alone as a shocking, hopeless, dark journey. I don't shock easily but this movie is intense, probably the most realistic, chilling I have scene in decades, no joke, The cinematography and lighting was near perfect.
With no CGI, all make-up and practical effects with a gory turnout, talk about psychological impact afterwards! LOL Damn! THIS WAS A HORROR MOVIE I WILL NEVER FORGET....I have to give it 5/5 unbelievable.
