Review of Maniac (2012) by Francisco P — 10 Oct 2013
Firs I'll say I have never seen the original Maniac, so I won't be able to say if this was a good remake or not but I will say this is a horrible movie, not in the bad way, but it has some horrible/disturbing images which will be hard to watch for some. On this horror movie we follow Frank, an owner of a mannequin store who stalks beautiful women and scalps them. Frank has some huge mommy issues (but I don't blame him) and he sees the mannequins as people which makes him even more scary, but after meeting Anna he starts to change. The movie is mostly seen in Frank's Point Of View which is extremely effective for a slasher film because it makes the audience feel like they are the ones killing which also brings the graphic stuff. The graphic murders in the movie are disgusting and they are done mostly as close-ups so I felt disgusted while watching (WHICH RARELY HAPPENS TO ME IN A MOVIE) so a lot of people won't be able to handle the movie. The cinematography, music and acting are fantastic which makes the atmosphere of the movie dark and claustrophobic. There is a lot of shaky cam in the movie and I hate that but in the movie it works because as it is seen in a POV it made the movie more realistic and I felt more involved in the movie.
Overall Maniac is a very enjoyable movie, short but graphic which I enjoyed, it does not get 5 stars because of the graphical parts and an ending I found confusing but you should watch it if you can handle extreme violence.
4/5.
