Review of Maniac (2012) by Tyler Y — 01 Apr 2014
Whilst Maniac really tries to create a visually and conceptually riveting horror movie, it succeeds with its technique, but doesn't deliver satisfaction. Delving into the psyche of the serial killer via Elijah Wood's character's thoughts and his first-person camera angles, the viewer is given a unique view of how a killer sates his deadly appetite.
With very cut-throat and brutally shot scenes, this movie definitely has some unique ways of filming cliche scenes. The problem lies with the cliche scenes and whether the technique worked in the favour, or against, the movie's general appeal.
Regardless, Elijah Wood nails his performance and an ominous mood is well created.
