Review of Maniac (2012) by Paul J — 04 May 2014
A bold experiment told almost entirely from 1st person (with a few out-of-body experiences). Normally, this approach wouldn't work or it would get tiresome, but because of the genre - horror - it fits the subject nicely.
It's remarkably well-made and Wood is perfectly cast. It's definitely a step up from the original nasty. That said, the original has a sleaze that is missing here. But let's face it, no modern horror films can capture the video sleaze of the early 80's (yet they do make an effort).
It borrows from modern masters like Gasper Noe and Nicolas Winding Refn. The music by Rob totally fits the bill and co-writer, Aja (High Tension) gives the film an unforgiving flair. The movie definitely takes some risks and it's pretty nasty at times, that said, it's no masterpiece.
Just a decent slasher with an original cinematic approach. God, Frodo fans will never be able to look at Elijah Wood the same way again.
