Just grabbed this on DVD at Suncoast.This is as good as 80's slashers get, William Lustig's Maniac is a dark twisted portrait of a schizophrenic personality wildly out of control, starring and written by cult icon Joe Spinell (Rocky) who's performance is chilling, sad, and at times even comedic.
unfortunately he died shortly after this was made so they couldn't follow through with a true sequel. Gore is by Tom Savini who has some great scenes including exploding a head with a live shotgun, and an intensely graphic scalping scene.
Far better than any of the other entries in the series in my opinion, Maniac is a dark atmospheric gory decent into madness that any slasher fan should be proud to own.
