Review of Manhunter (1986) by Spyros T — 12 Sep 2012
A good old school psychological thriller that unlike `Red Dragon' it was not designed to resemble an established world of a classic film. Poor Cox, he will always be compared to Hopkins. It's unfair because once you get over the fact that someone else than Hopkins is playing Lecter you can see that he gives a Lecter that is different, to be sure, but intelligent in a way that to me, is more realistic, intriguing and ultimately frightening.
The same goes also for the Noonan-Fiennes comparison. This man was born to play villains! I also liked very much the score. Surely a bit dated at times but very few directors, except maybe Sergio Leone and David Lynch knows how to use music to set the mood better than Michael Mann.
