Review of Manhunter (1986) by Tommy C — 03 Feb 2008
Kicks Red Dragon into touch easily but, let's face it, this was a single Michael Mann movie and RD was the third in a franchise (brownie points for anybody who can tell me any 3rd "franchise " movie that is better, or even as good as, the 1st.
Points deducted for any mention of Poilce Academy). The power of Cox's performance lies, for me, in his sheer ordinariness; Hopkins was excellent but the set-up that you were going to meet a nutter was cranked very high: here, you could almost imagine sitting down with the guy for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Added bonuses of Dennis Farina doing what he does best and William L. Petersen's icy portrayal. Compared to this performance, His CSI Grissom is a total party animal.
