Review of Manhunter (1986) by Steve C — 08 Mar 2008
One of Michael Mann's earliest films is the highly overlooked "first movie" to the Hannibal series. Although not quite as great as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991), Manhunter is definitely better than its future remake, RED DRAGON (2002).
In fact, Manhunter is noticably different from all the Hannibal films in general because it's more of an urban action thriller than a horror suspense, stylized to the max by trademark Mann. Think a mix between David Lynch and Mann's TV series "Miami Vice" and you pretty much get the tautly crafted and poppy Manhunter.
It may not be the most emotionally effective method for directing a film of such genre, but it is truly fascinating and original to watch. In all, I recommend this film. It's one of Michael Mann's best films, and definitely one of the better Hannibal films of all the five made.
You don't see too many "suspense thrillers" made like this.
