Review of Manhunter (1986) by Luke P — 25 Jun 2008
Not even close to "The Silence of the Lambs". I liked Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter, although Anthony Hopkins is better in about every way. The best feature of "Manhunter" though is the mental struggle of detective Graham, who fears he might have psychopathic tendencies.
The big problems include the editing, directing, acting and ending, the latter being an essential hit-or-miss maker for serial killer films. I finished the film with a bad taste in my mouth...not because the last scenes were disturbing, but because they felt forced and dated.
I wish they would have sacrificed a happy (sappy) ending for one that would have been more real and thought-provoking. It likely would have made a difference in my overall impression of the film.
