Review of Manhunter (1986) by Andrew S — 09 Jul 2008
The first take on Harris' Red Dragon book, this one is still the best, possibly even better than the following Hannibal movies. Definitely a product of the 80s, but beyond that it's a gripping take on Will Graham's descent into the mind of a psycho.
A study of what it takes to think like a killer and also what it takes to emerge out of such darkness, this does the neat trick of both humanizing the monster and degenerating the hero without losing track of either the basic good or bad.
(And Brian Cox is a surprisingly subtle and effective Lecter.).
