Review of Manhunter (1986) by Lucas Y — 07 Nov 2008
Sadly, not a lot of people have even heard of this film. I didn't even know of it till about a week ago! Manhunter is a very solid original to the Hannibal Leckter movies. I actually like it more than any of the others.
Brian Cox is every bit as good, if not better than Anthony Hopkins. Michael Mann just didn't let him run with the character as much as Jonathan Demme let Hopkins. He's still extremely convincing though. William Petersen I will admit has too much of an 80's Miami Vice vibe going on, but he's solid. The real star of this movie though is Tom Noonan who plays the killer Petersen is trying to track down. His scenes are the best of the movie and he's extremely SCARY! The scene where he has the detective tied up is one of the creepiest scenes I've seen in a while. The ending with Joan Allen and Iron Butterfly is classic.
