Review of Manhunter (1986) by Ryan S — 04 Jan 2009
Superior thriller involving FBI agent Will Graham who has a knack for thinking like the killers he hunts which brings up all sorts of troubles in his personal life. His last big catch was Hannibal Lecter who in this movie was first played by Brian Cox.
His Lecter isn't as sexy as Hopkins' portrayal, he's reptilian and cold but possesses a keen instinct for others motivations and especially weaknesses. Will visits Lecter just to get back into the swing of things and then he's off hunting the "Tooth Fairy", so dubbed by the media.
Our killer is a giant of a man, in the book his forearm is described as being "like an oak banister", in the movie he isn't as big but at 6'6" he still towers menacingly. Many twists and turns, some great imagery (the flaming guy in the wheelchair!) and a huge finishing act set to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
Much better than the newer Red Dragon remake.
