Review of Manhunter (1986) by Pascal T — 14 Sep 2009
Jonathan Demme won the Academy Award in 1992 for directing the Silence of the Lambs but it was Michael Mann who first brought the cinematic world the character of Hannibal Lecter in this alleged thriller five years earlier.
Manhunter isn't terrible and never quite paint dry dull, but it is one of the most tedious films I've ever seen. The whole movie is building up to a conclusion that isn't all that spectacular or believable and set up around a killer that isn't too interesting or scary.
It is however well acted and with strong production values, although the great Brian Cox as Hannibal is infuriatingly underused. Anthony Hopkins was only in the Silence of the Lambs for eighteen minutes, Cox's time onscreen is a mere fraction of that.
