Review of Manhunter (1986) by Chris N — 28 Dec 2009
Okay, I was hard on this movie before. I mean yeah, it's still bad, but not a 1. It tries to be faithful to the book until right up til the end. The real problem with the movie though is that it's just so boring. Great story that it makes boring. William L. Peterson is actually not a bad choice for the role, better than Edward Norton, but Brian Cox is awful. He only ever should play the angry father-in-law type character. That's how he always feels in a movie. He can't play a diabolical cannibalistic genius. That just isn't him. He should play the guy trying to CATCH him at the most. Dennis Farina was good.
The real drawback of this movie though was the music and the climactic moments. William was obviously directed to freak out when he hit those moments. It sucked. And the music took all of the success out of every moment in the movie. It had that cheesy eighties techno computer soundtrack which ruins everything except fantasy movies which it ironically strengthens. `.
