Review of Manhunter (1986) by Matt F — 12 Oct 2010
I could definitely see why this film bombed at the box office but is now a cult classic. I think if Michael Mann did more to dive into Will Graham's past, about his time at the psyche ward especially, instead of just referencing it through Hannibal Lector, this would have been much better.
As it was, this is one of the rare films where the sequel (Silence of the Lambs) was better than the opening act. This was one of the first films I saw that had Joan Allen and Brian Cox, not to mention CSI's Gil Grissom, William Petersen.
I wonder why Petersen's star never rose after his performance because it was very good here.
