Review of Manhunter (1986) by Anmol R — 20 Sep 2011
Rewatched this on Blu-Ray for the first time in years. Mann was one of the first directors I truly got into and thus Manhunter one of the first films I started loving, post-being a film buff. It's even better than I remember (bumped it up to the full 5).
A stunning crime film. The cinematography is beautiful (Mann's signature blue hues perhaps more present here than any other Mann film).
Peterson is brilliant - you really feel like you get inside Will's head and I sympathised considerably with the character. The most interesting aspect of this is the notion of getting inside a killer's mentality and then not being able to leave the thoughts behind. Noonan is excellent as the killer. Cox gives a cool turn as Lecktor (spelt differently here).
80s music backs it all up. It's a riveting and superbly crafted story. It should be considered more of a classic than it is.
I remember not liking Red Dragon much, so this is a miles better adaptation for me, but I'll rewatch Red Dragon again, as so many seem to love it.
