Review of Manhunter (1986) by Danny R — 14 Dec 2011
An intriguing and absorbing thriller directed with great visual style by Michael Mann, about a rarely talented but troubled former FBI profiler Will Graham who has the uncanny ability to get inside a psychopath's mind, he is played by William Petersen in a brooding and brilliantly intense performance, who nearly lost his life and his mind after capturing the diabolical serial killer Dr.
Hannibal Lecter, superbly played here by Brian Cox. Graham is called out of retirement to hunt down a monstrous psychopath known as "The Tooth Fairy" which is played by character actor Tom Noonan who delivers a truly chilling turn as the towering freakiest madmen.
The scenes of Graham reliving how the Tooth Fairy, who is driven by his own bizarre megalomaniacal fantasies slips into houses at night slaughtering whole families, one member at a time are eerily realistic and disturbing.
Intelligent and gripping all the way with memorable supporting performances by Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Dennis Farina, and Stephen Lang. Stunning surreal imagery with voyeuristic camera angles by cinematographer Dante Spinotti.
A cinematically rewarding thriller. Highly Recommended.
