Review of Manhunter (1986) by Adam K — 27 Oct 2012
The original and best adaptation of Red Dragon, perhaps the best adaptation of any Thomas Harris novel, it's between this and The Silence Of The Lambs. This is set apart by it's beautiful cinematography, and lush synth soundtrack which creates a completely different tone to that which was set by the later films. William Petersen's portrayal of Will Graham is brilliant, displaying the character's fear of his own fractured psyche perfectly. Tom Noonan's 'Tooth Fairy' is both terrifyingly disturbed, and also sympathetically fragile. Brian Cox's portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is an interesting contrast to the version that has been immortalised by Anthony Hopkins since, portraying a more down to earth version of the character, but Hopkins owns that role for me!
Anyway, get it watched! :).
