Review of Manhunter (1986) by Christian W — 21 Aug 2014
Sure, it was certainly ahead of its time and certainly a progenitor to the cop show craze, but in retrospect it really doesn't hold up, even to Red Dragon. Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Francis Dollarhyde is much more comprehensive and sympathetic and isn't crammed just into the last act of the film.
Edward Norton's Will Graham is on equal footing here, but it's the chemistry between Hopkins and Norton that sells Red Dragon. Brian Cox is believable as a doctor serial killer. But he never seems to have the commanding control that Hopkins wields even when he is in a cell. And his chemistry with Petersen just pails in comparison.
One area this movie succeeds is the expanded role of Jack Crawford, which is most welcome. The finale at Dollarhyde's place feels a bit weaker than the finale that is at the end of Red Dragon.
Overall, there is the least amount of Hannibal Lecter in this film than any other, which is unfortunate because he is really the selling point.
So while it's good, I actually prefer Red Dragon and the TV series "Hannibal".
