Review of Manhunter (1986) by Drago? C — 04 Mar 2015
A movie that is like the 80s in a can. Droning synthesizer monotone over long blue-tinted frames of people staring at each other or the horizon, drama, overacting and a young William Petersen make Manhunter a weirdly effective mix of genuine good movie and so bad it's good. For god's sake there's even a tiger in the movie, all it's missing is a white suit and a large pile of cocaine (which i'm sure was abundant on set). Petersen pulls an early deranged Gus Grissom but it's a suave, restrained Brian Cox that steals the show as a believable Hannibal LECKTOR, in my opinion superior to Hopkins' brain and scenery chewing turn at it. Bonus: A horribly filmed stylised shootout set to Inna Gadda da Vida...
The type of weird disaster/masterpiece that's hard to take your eyes off of, Manhunter is an 80s movie that everybody must see.
