Review of Manhattan Melodrama (1934) by Mike S — 15 May 2009
The first scene of this film is rather shocking and I was amazed at how quickly the tragedy started. But once the characters aged, it slowed down for a bit and dealt with a lot of exposition establishing the relationship between the dangerous card shark (Clark Gable) and his childhood friend, the new district attorney (William Powell).
About halfway through, the action started again and I became pretty hooked. Melodrama is the perfect word for it, but it asks serious questions about loyalty and friendship and doing the right thing. It's a well-constructed story with some nice twists and solid acting.
Besides the slow pace early on, this is certainly a worthwhile classic.
