Review of Manhattan (1979) by Julia C — 08 Sep 2008
One of Woody Allen's slight odes to New York City and romance. I would've liked this more if it had a more likely romance at the center than a 17-year-old girl(Mariel Hemingway) and a 42-year-old man who isn't that attractive (Woody Allen).
Hemingway is a lovely presence but doesn't seem like a formidable love interest for the bag of nerves that is Allen's Issac. Keaton is a better fit and she's excellent as usual but an impossibly young looking Streep seems a little wobbly and inexperienced as Issac's ex-wife who is writing a tell-all about their relationship.
Overall Manhattan is wise but if Allen would've drop his preening narcissism it could've been far more affecting.
