Review of Manhattan (1979) by Mitch B — 15 Jan 2013
Woody Allen's magnum opus. An ode to New York City in the guise of a complicated love story revolving around four people. Hemingway is heartbreaking as Allen's young, often naive lover. Keaton is the pseudo-intellectual that drives viewers and Allen batty with her arrogance.
Shot is exquisite black and white, with the enduring image of Allen and Keaton sitting with the Queensboro Bridge in the background. Best scenes: the party scene wherein a female guest doing her best Judy Holiday impression quips: "I finally had an orgasm, and my doctor said it was the wrong kind," and Allen's character recording himself in the final fifteen minutes of the film.
