Review of Manhattan (1979) by Tony P — 27 Feb 2009
Woody Allen's continuing examination of love's hapless brutality. It's over-shadowed by the similar and superior Annie Hall, but Allen's dialogue is sharper here than I've ever seen it.
As in all his work, the relationships are perfectly drawn and exhilerating to observe through both joy and torment. The cinematography is especially interesting this time around. It's classically influenced, but with many a scene being only a single take.
Really a stong film, but nothing unique in the scope of the writer/director's filmography.
