Review of Manhattan (1979) by Kevin J — 12 Oct 2010
Woody Allen proves he is a genius here. Well, he proved it in 1977 with Annie Hall, but Manhattan proves why he can continue making films today that don't match up and people still get excited about them.
This is "movie magic" without appealing to the often overly sentimental or sappy spielbergian ways. You can just tell you're witnessing classing moments in film when Allen and Keaton walk through the museum together as silhoettes, or in the final scene when he's looking at Tracy through the doors and you see the reflection.
I felt like I did when I saw Casablanca for the first time or Citizen Kane. Hilarious yet beautiful. This is one of those movies that makes you want to say; "They don't make em like they used to.
".
