Review of Manhattan (1979) by Jorge B — 27 Apr 2012
A must see for any movie lover. This film represents everything that New York means for Allen and it shows an endearing tale of love. When I say love I do not mean boy meets girl and everything is perfect and everybody is happy; but I mean the complex feeling in which not everybody believes but many pursue, I mean the kind of emotion that does not obey any convention and especially that one true sensation that makes every excuse vanish.
It may seem familiar given that this script has been plagiarized many times but those copies never reach the effect of this film. The acting is in tune with the needs of the script, it is one of the first movies that Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton ever did and it is one of the few major films that Mariel Hemingway (granddaughter of an author you may know) ever did which is a shame because she is very good.
One of Woody's finest films and a seventies classic due to its originality, esthetics and aproach to subjects such as homosexuality, age and deception.
