Review of Manhattan (1979) by Rainer K — 29 Dec 2011
Nobody's perfect - especially the characters in Manhattan. That's what makes the film so good - flaws conveying familiarity.
Woody Allen's love letter to New York also convinced me on the visual level. Beautiful images of New York in Black and White - Allen pulled off to do a movie both poetic and visually stunning.
He's also one of the best writers in business - although I've seen not much of him yet (hopefully will in the near future) his script is gold again. Magical dialogues even though merely anything happens - they're just talking but it's compelling anyways. Not to mention the humour, cynism and slight sarcasm.
In a nutshell - really great writing.
As always he assembled a talented cast, so acting is not a problem either.
I won't comment or overanalyse it. Let's say it's a wonderful story - rather true-to-life without heroes or heroics and lacking generic movie love moments.
