Review of Mandy (2018) by Allan B — 30 Sep 2018
I have an alternate theory for how this movie was made. I believe the director took one look at the final cut, thought it looked like shit, and decided to add a bunch of funky filters so it looked like an "art" film.
It's a mess. Yes, Cage gives one of his better performances, but only because he has, like, ten lines total. Yes, Linus Roache is a fantastic actor. Too bad we don't get a good look at him for much of the film.
There are so many events that strain belief in this film, it ought to be labelled "fantasy." Too many things are offered without explanation or follow-through. *spoiler* Cage gets stabbed in the left lung -- it's a deep wound by a nasty knife.
Aaaaaaand it has virtually no impact upon his later movements. The nightscope crossbow? No explanation. The blacksmithing? Same. This film has zero internal logic -- or logic of any kind. Maybe it'd be fun to watch on weed.
And maybe not.
