Review of Manderlay (2005) by Tiberius C — 02 May 2011
Gangsters belatedly free slaves in von Trier's provocative sequel to Dogville. Under gangster-daughter's tutelage, the 20-or-so freed slaves create something of a commune with mixed results. As per VonTrier, there is a cynicism at the heart of the exercise and people with a PC sensibility will not be happy with the twist(s) at the end.
But von Trier has a knack of weaving fabulous fairytales that keep one engaged and sometimes surprised. Continues the bare-bones set ethic of Dogville, which works fine until someone knocks on an invisible door with sound effect attached.
Just buy a door. The cast is very good with Dallas Howard exceptional as Grace. I'm not kidding.
