The strong performances by Idris Elba and Naomie Harris save this movie. It's always a balancing act for biopics and historical films to fluctuate between retelling history and telling the story. You don't win over an audience by a History Channel narration, but you can with personal portrayals and relationships.
Besides the script, it's the actors that have to carry that burden and both of the main leads excel at their job.
