Review of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) by Ryan K — 14 Jan 2014
This is one of the most iconic men in political history and one of the greatest fighters for unity ever put under the spot light. This film does not echo that power and importance. Like most recent biographical films, it is made out of order, sloppily filling in some details and missing others.
A director of such an important story must compile the most vital elements of someones life story and create them as unforgettable scenes. A serious decision when creating this type of film is the presence of romance.
'Mandela' overplayed and frankly misused his relationship with Winnie and needed more of a Spike Lee's 'Malcolm X' take on marriage amongst politics. The magnitude of his triumph and effect on the world is mostly missing.
