Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Steviegjd — 13 Dec 2016
I never thought I would think or say this: but Casey Afflect tackles an emotionally complex and pained character and does an amazing job. This is well-written, well acted, emotionally devastating movie that reveals its soft underbelly in a series of reflections from the main character's perspective.
Without discussing plot, this film is really about an action that yields such terrible and life altering results that a person can never come back from the consequences. This could have been more of a pity party than it is, where there sort of a nobility in suffering.
It is not a movie for everybody. It is too relentlessly depressing and hopeless for people who only want escapist entertainment from movies. But if you don't mind working for it the payoff here is tremendous.
I really loved this film.
