Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Brent_Marchant — 25 Nov 2016
A moderately entertaining character study with relatively profound explorations of issues like redemption, forgiveness and understanding one's limitations. But it's also often an exercise in taking itself way too seriously, with more than a few pregnant pauses, lingering shots of mugging emoting and throwaway slice-of-life sequences.
Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges turn in capable but overrated performances, though Michelle Williams steals the show with what should be an Oscar-winning supporting portrayal. Enjoy this one, but don't get taken in by the hype.
