Review of Manakamana (2013) by Karen F — 19 Dec 2014
Mesmerising. So little is said, but the few words we hear say so much, for example about ice creams: 'we didn't have milk when we were children so we don't know how to eat these' or 'people think I'm stupid because I'm deaf'.
But more important than the words are the faces which evoke lives lived and being lived and the relationships between people. Some of the faces are so powerful in their stoicism and withheld emotion that they brought tears to my mind.
The recent history of Nepal - new villages, slate roofs, corn fields, cable car itself - is built again by the tiniest of details. The camerawork (and soundscape) of both people and landscape is excellent.
