Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Ed F — 17 Jun 2010
An incredibly interesting story about one mans passionate thirst for danger which is perhaps more about his insane personality than the death-defying World Trade Center stunt in which he so willingly pursues.
At a modest 90 minute length, the film breezes along at a very welcomely mellow pace, blending interviews and facts with exposition and moments of sheer, eye-opening beauty. I loved the constant use of Erik Satie's 'Gymnopedie No.
1' as it lends the film a dreamy quality which matches the fluidity of the camerawork and the tranquil shots of Petit acting out his quest in the harsh light of day. As a documentary, it isnt perfect but it is a very personal and affecting film which grabs audience attention and leaves you feeling quite nervous and subdued in equal measure.
