Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Kurt F — 25 Jan 2011
Well... I appreciate the effort that went into crafting this movie, combining interviews, archival footage, home movies, photos, and dramatic reenactments. I give this a decent rating for the filmmaking aspects. But, still, I found the whole process of what Philippe was doing to be kind of a waste of time. His act wasn't inspirational to watch or achieve, really. If you have that much nerve and bravery, not to mention time and energy, why spend it doing a tightrope walk between the Twin Towers? To his credit, Philippe says there is no why. Okay, so why do we have to watch it?
Clearly the weight of this movie hinges on the 911 events, which makes me wonder how respectful this movie is. Why tell this story now, about someone who apparently valued spectacle over life on the WTC when so many people who valued their lives died there?
Not to mention - what if Philippe fell and landed on someone? What if the wire landed on someone? I guess no one considered that.
