Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Corey B — 31 Jan 2012
Structured like a heist film, "Man on Wire" is both incredibly suspenseful, but also touchingly beautiful. There are many insane and exciting details that went into pulling off this stunt, and "Man on Wire" focuses on each and every one, but in the end it's really about capturing a moment in time in an ever changing world.
It's suspenseful, exciting, and ultimately sad, but it never tries to wring out the emotions. 9/11 is wisely never mentioned (its shadow already looms largely over the film without having to), and the film focuses mostly on the facts of August 7, 1974 and the events leading up to it. But the storytellers are never dull, and the movie never falls in to the cold/clinical trap of so many other documentaries.
