Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
With a subject that's easily profound and inspirational (enigmatic tightrope-walking scratched by Petit and his entourage with poetic appreciation and ardor!), I expected either a complete retreat into sentimentalism or a complete 180 into hard gravity.
Man On Wire offers a little of both, and maybe that's why the resulting documentary has an unsatisfying resolution that feels splintered and awkward. It has a stylish and strong-willed presentation, but it never departs from a fundamentally vain, inconsequential tone.
