Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Megan O — 07 Feb 2010
Man On Wire is one of the finest films of 2008, and one of the absolute best documentaries I've seen -- I'm surprised it took me so long to get around to watching it. The style of the film, the way that it goes about telling its story, is amazingly inspired, very unique, and very effective.
Photographs and actual footage are blended seamlessly with re-enactments and interviews, creating a taut and thrilling atmosphere akin to that of a classic "heist" film. Man On Wire is the story of Philippe Petit, a tight-rope walker with a dream of walking between the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
Petit is an eccentric character, to be sure, but it is only in the final few minutes of the film that we realize just how eccentric he is... reminding us that a story this truly bizarre (and this deeply emotional) is not something that can be written.
