Review of Man on Wire (2008) by Brian K — 20 Jul 2011
As I watched this film the thought grew from a whisper to full shout that not only was Petit's deed incredible and suspenseful but perhaps of equal value is his telling of the story. What a storyteller!
This 2008 film never mentions the atrocity of 2001 but it hangs over the entire production. Petit's story is a celebration of life, the opposite of the attacks. It can never be repeated and we can't forget while watching him flirt with death how many people died in the same structures.
The weight of the film increases with the fact that all we have are a few grainy shots of the walk. It was a surprise. Notifying the media would have destroyed that aspect. Even with the lack of film of "the event" there are many photos of the preparations and enough shots from the top of the towers that made me check to be sure the earth was still beneath my feet!! BEST film of any kind I've seen this year.
