Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by David K — 14 Aug 2008
An absolutely fascinating look at one of comedy's most infamous legends. Jim Carrey stars in one of the most underrated performances in cinematic history. How he didn't win an Oscar I will never know.
"Man on the Moon" is from director Milos Forman who also made "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest." It appears he has a fascination with the line that divides people between sanity and lunacy and those that fall right on the line.
Andy Kaufman falls on that line. He was always aware of what he was doing even if he didn't know what its effect was going to be like. But that was a part of his show; the unknowing. That's what this movie conveys so well and why it works so well.
For the first time we're actually in on the joke, something Kaufman never let happen. And it really helps establish his legendary status. Andy Kaufman isn't for everyone. He was very different.
But his brilliance is undeniable and that's all this movie is trying to do. It's trying to show the man's genius. And it does so in an engaging and entertaining fashion, those of which make for an amazing film.
