Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Ashley C — 23 Sep 2008
As a biography, it's a decent account of Kaufman's life and career, and Carrey is nearly spot on in the lead role. At the same time, it feels distant and even slightly artificial (although given the subject, this may have been a conscious choice on Forman's part).
Even looking at the film in its most flattering light, it feels like there should be more. Very little in this film wasn't covered by the numerous Andy Kaufman retrospective programs that used to air repeatedly on Comedy Central. Perhaps knowing less about Kaufman would have helped the experience. It's a good film, but only just.
And despite being a fan and admirer of both Kaufman and R.E.M., I've never really liked that damn song.
