Review of Man on the Moon (1999) by Robert O — 16 Jan 2009
Watched this again for the first time in several years last night. It was every bit as good as I remember it. Carrey's best role other than the Truman Show. I have a feeling I wouldn't have found Kaufman's antics very funny had I been around to see them, but I'm sure I would have been extremely interested in this comedic aberration.
Excuse me, "song and dance man." The last few scenes make this movie, and I find Kaufman's hysteria at the sleight of hand performed in the clinic in the Philippines especially moving. Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus) really loves doing movies about people who are not understood or appreciated in their own time.
Kaufman certainly fits that mold, and Forman was the perfect director for this touching, thought-provoking, hysterical film.
